Patterns in Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere-Systems
Monitoring, Modelling and Data Assimilation

Goals:

The soil, vegetation and the lower atmosphere are key compartments of the Earth, where almost all activities of mankind take place. This region is characterized by extremely complex patterns, structures and processes that act at different time and space scales. While the exchange of energy, water and carbon is continuous between the different compartments, the pertinent fluxes are strongly heterogeneous and variable in space and time. Therefore, the quantitative prediction of the systems behavior constitutes a major challenge to scientists and policymakers, especially in view of global climate change.

Conventional techniques for site characterization are time consuming, cost intensive, and do not often effectively support decision making towards sustainable remediation. Therefore, new techniques for step by step site characterization strategy with smart feed back loops are necessary and have to be developed.

Crop Sequence and the nutrient acquisition from the subsoil

The research unit aims to describe and quantify processes in, and the amount of nutrients released from, the agricultural subsoil. The creation of biopore systems, soil structure dynamics, microbial activities, water dynamics and nutrient transformation processes will be described and quantified.
