The PhD Programme at the Department of Economics prepares you both for a career in academia as well as for qualified positions in government ministries and agencies, international organizations and the private sector. Our alumni hold important positions throughout society. The Department’s supervising capacity is particularly strong in labour economics, macroeconomics, political economics and public economics. We offer an intellectually stimulating research environment with several research seminars each week and a large flow of international guests.
Position:
The holder of a PhD-student position shall primarily devote her/his time to own research studies. Other departmental work, such as educational or administrative can be part of the position (max 20%). Read more about the PhD Programme at the Department of Economics here.

Admission:
General admission requirements: For admission to the PhD Programme, the applicant must have completed at least 240 ECTS-credits of coursework (four years of full-time studies), including at least 60 ECTS-credits at the advanced (master) level (one year of full-time studies), or have acquired the equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Special admission requirements: In addition to the general admission requirements, the applicant must have at least 90 ECTS-credits in economics (three semesters), or have acquired the equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
The admission requirements apply at the date of admission, not at the date of application. Students expected to fulfill the general and special admission criteria by early August are welcome to apply.

Required documents for the application:

1. Personal letter (max. two pages) in which you describe why you want to enroll in the PhD Programme in Economics at Uppsala University and where you state the fields within economics that are of primary interest to you.
2. Attested copies of all qualifications, including all completed academic courses and academic degrees.
3. Copies of essays that you have authored.
4. A CV.
5. Contact information for two academic references (address, email address and telephone number).
6. The GRE test result is sent directly to the department. GRE: school code 0247, dept. code 1801. Please note that the GRE test is mandatory.

PhD specialisation in Economics
The Department of Economics is looking for highly motivated and talented individuals. The PhD specialisation in economics aims to give dedicated graduates a solid training in performing high quality scientific research in economics, making use of state of the art empirical and theoretical techniques. The programme prepares students for the international academic job market, for positions at national and international policy institutions, central banks, and research organisations.
PhD research scholars are provided with personal computers, printer access, extensive library resources, and a wide range of software.
NHH and the Department of Economics received their first National Centre of Excellence from the Norwegian Research Council in 2017 - Centre for Experimental Research on Fairness, Inequality and Rationality (FAIR). Other NHH research centres have also received particular support and focus due to their high research quality, such at the Centre for Business Economics (CBE) and the Centre for Macroeconomics and Natural Resources. The PhD Programme
The PhD Programme at NHH is a 4-year fully funded programme, which combines an intensive course component with research and relevant work experience, preparing the school’s graduates for competitive careers towards national and international academic institutions and industry. Our PhD graduates have been hired by renowned institutions such as University of Oxford, HEC Paris, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California, RMIT Melbourne, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Norwegian Competition Authority, as well as in the banking and technology industry. 
PhD research scholars receive their own office space within their department and enjoy a highly stimulating and rewarding research environment. The programme gives preference to applicants who submit relevant research proposals that fit best with the research interests of the department. If applicants are otherwise equally qualified, female applicants will be given preference.
The annual salary for the PhD Research Scholar position is set according to the Norwegian State Salary, and currently pays 449 000 NOK gross (equivalent to approximately EUR 47 600 or USD 55 100). The salary ensures a fair standard of living in Norway, and is subject to Norwegian taxes and benefits, including health care provision.
