S/he will have the liberty to select suitable projects of his/her interest from different themes : - Modeling of Energy Systems : Molecular Dynamics and Density Functional Theory simulation of energy systems e.g. Lithium-ion Battery, Nanomaterials/Nanoparticle for Energy Storage and Conversion. - Mechanics of Nanomaterials : Different aspects of Mechanics (e.g. Fracture, Friction) of various nanomaterials: Graphene and its derivatives, Molybdenum Disulfides, and different other 2D nanomaterials and Transition Metal Dichalcogenide (TMDC). - Imperfections in Crystalline Solids : Modeling Dislocation Dynamics; Phase Field methods for microstructure evolution.Candidate’s background : - The position requires an undergraduate/master degree or equivalent within Nanotechnology, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Civil/Mechanical/Aerospace/Chemical Engineering. - Candidate must be motivated for advanced research. S/he needs to have persistence, perseverance, strong determination, and dedication. - Background in Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulation, Density Functional Theory (DFT) is preferred – but not essential. Candidate should have strong interest in learning MD, DFT and related tools (e.g. LAMMPS, VASP). - Strong coding skills in Matlab, C++, Shell scripting is preferred.Funding : The position is fully funded (tuition fee, health insurance everything will be covered). We are seeking a motivated and talented PhD student with interest and skill in tissue deformation simulation and biomechanical modelling. The main focus will be on new approaches of tissue deformation computation for surgical planning. The activity will be carried out in the context of improving planning for forearm surgery, by analyzing and simulating anatomical structures relevant for distal stability during pro-supination. The work will be performed within the scope of a D-A-CH collaborative research project, funded through the FWF and SNSF, respectively, jointly with the University Hospital Balgrist in Zurich and the Institute for Surgical Technology, University of Bern, Switzerland. The development will comprise working in an interdisciplinary team.
Candidates should have earned a Master or Diploma degree in Computer Science, Mechanics, Mathematics, or other related fields. Good knowledge in biomechanics and/or physically-based simulation is expected. In addition, some experience with surgical planning applications is of advantage. Experience and knowledge in C/C++ programming is required, as well as a good level in English, both written and spoken.
The position is open immediately until filled. It is offered on the level of a non-permanent university research student for three years. Salaries are internationally competitive and commensurate with qualification and experience.

Description of the job

A PhD opportunity “Additive manufacturing – Process Simulation and Design Optimization” has arisen within Airbus to be based on the Toulouse site in France.
The PhD will be managed in collaboration with the LAMPA research laboratory in Angers (France).
Tasks & accountabilities

The main objective of the PhD is to develop:
(i) Numerical tools for chained simulation of the different steps of the industrial processes, to predict defects such as residual stress and distortion;
(ii) In collaboration with aeronautical design engineers, a prototype software that allows them to anticipate manufacturing problems, such as residual stress and distortion.
The research works are focused on the manufacturing of titanium alloy parts (Ti6Al4V) using SLM (Selective Laser Melting) and EBAM (Electron Beam Additive Manufacturing) processes.
The main tasks are the following:
(i) Development of a predictive tool adapted to preliminary design of aeronautical parts obtained by additive manufacturing;
(ii) Experimental analysis and modelling of each stages of the industrial process;
(iii) Numerical simulation of the manufacturing process to predict the distortions at each stage.
The PhD student must also contribute to:

• Project management;
  
• Application of new knowledge to industrial use-cases and transmission of new knowledge to AIRBUS engineers;
  
• Communication and publications: patents, technology transfers, scientific articles and international conferences.
  

Required skills

As the successful candidate you are able to demonstrate the following skills and competences:

• A Master 2 in research is mandatory (aerospace, materials, structural mechanics, numerical analysis),
  
• An experience in Structure and in Material and processes is mandatory,
  
• An experience in programming would be highly appreciated,
  
• Knowledge of Fortran and/or Python and or C would be highly appreciated,
  
• Knowledge of ABAQUS is mandatory,

Multiple Ph.D. positions with generous financial support are available for qualified applicants at the Mechanical Engineering Department of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX under the supervision of Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Ali Heydari.

The research focus is on Controls and Robotics. Particular interest will be on utilizing nonlinear control methods (e.g., Sliding Mode and MPC) or intelligent control methods (e.g., Reinforcement Learning) for controlling different dynamical systems, including network of robots, human-inspired robots, and flying vehicles.

Qualifications:
Applicants should have both MS and BS degrees in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering. Moreover, the following qualifications are required:
