PhD scholarship at the Department of Economics, University of Copenhagen: Biased Attention and Economic Decision-Making
Application deadline: 18-07-2014Start date: 01-11-2014Department/Location: Økonomisk Institut
The Department of Economics at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a PhD scholarship within the project entitled “Biased Attention and Economic Decision-Making”. The successful candidate will be employed from November 1st, 2014.
The project
Classical economic theory builds on a simple but powerful model of rational behavior: People are assumed to have unlimited cognition and make choices so as to maximize their well-being by attending to all available information. However, since the amount of information we are continuously confronted with is vast and cognitive resources are limited, our attention is restricted, implying that we often neglect important aspects of the environments we act in. The 3 year PhD project will focus on formally integrating the psychological mechanisms guiding our attention into economic theory and to theoretically as well as experimentally analyze how the resulting limited and biased attention can cause deviations from standard economic predictions. The PhD project will be a cross-disciplinary project investigating the consequences of biased attention for consumer choice, firm behavior, financial markets and policy makers.
Qualifications
The PhD candidate should preferably have prior programming skills and a strong interest in experimental research.
The 5+3 PhD study programme
In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study programme the applicant must have completed a two year master’s degree programme or have earned 120 ECTS credits at an equivalent academic level before starting his or her employment. Applicants should check the specific study programmes for more detailed descriptions of the entry requirements. PhD students are paid a salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the 3 year period of time without additional pay. The work obligation can for instance include teaching.
