PhD Grants in BiotechHealth for International Students in Portugal, 2014
Foundation for Science and Technology is funding eight grants for PhD programme on Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology applied to Health Sciences (BiotechHealth) in 2014 year. This programme is conducted at two schools of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP and FFUP), four research institutions (INEB, IBMC, IPATIMUP and REQUIMTE) and one hospital (the Hospital Centre of Porto) in Portugal.
Study Subject(s): Grants are awarded for Doctoral Programme on Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology Applied to Health Sciences (BiotechHealth).

Eligibility: As minimum condition to apply, national or international candidates must have an MSc degree with a strong background in at least one of the following topics: bioengineering, biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, biology, medicine, biochemistry, nanomedicine, chemistry, or a relevant scientific field.

Scholarship Description: Biotech Health is a PhD programme jointly organized by two schools of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP and FFUP), four research institutions (INEB, IBMC, IPATIMUP and REQUIMTE) and one hospital (the Hospital Centre of Porto). It aims to provide excellence in doctoral training in Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology applied to Health Sciences, in an interdisciplinary and international environment, fostering collaboration between internationally recognized research groups, hospitals and industrial companies.
Number of award(s): 8 grants will be available in 2014 under the FCT PhD Programme.
Selection Criteria: First phase: The criteria to be met by the candidates are the following:
1) Quality of CV, as judged by:
-Academic curriculum (e.g. marks obtained in the master’s degree);
-Previous stay (more than 3 months) in a reference laboratory or company;
-Active participation in research papers published or accepted for publication in international journals.
2) Motivation letter.
The evaluation of all applications will be carried out by a Selection Committee appointed by the Scientific Committee.
Second phase: The candidates selected in First Phase will present their previous work in the format of a poster in a session to which the faculty of the Programme will be invited. They will be evaluated for:
1) scientific spirit;
2) ability to rigorously communicate scientific results;
3) interest in developing a career in a research laboratory or an industry. Their enthusiasm will be under close scrutiny.
In this phase candidates will be asked to provide scientific areas or themes in which they would like to conduct research and will have the opportunity to meet with prospective supervisors.
Notification: Candidates will be selected by 31 of July, 2013.

-Applicants who apply to advertised projects are expected to have received their final certificates (Master, Diploma etc.) before the projected start of the PhD work.
