PhD: Bainite Formation in Automotive Steels, Delft University and Tech. Netherlands
The goal of the proposed research project is to expand a physical model for bainite formation (see Acta Materialia 61 [2013] 5458-5468) recently developed in our group to the specificities of 3rd generation automotive steels. The novelty of the present research project is to extend the model to new steel chemistries and microstructural configurations, in particular the bainite formation in combination with martensite. The work focuses on the modelling aspect but there are also opportunities to do sophisticated experimental work to validate the model modifications. The research is of a fundamental nature but aims to provide high quality input to the steel industry. The project is funded by the R&D department of the largest steel company in the world. We have intensive contacts with key academic groups all over the world in the field of physical transformation models, and they will be made available during the course of the research. The position is an excellent stepping stone for either a further academic or a further industrial career.U Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home (with a contract of two years or longer), and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment; an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor; and a Doctoral Education Programme aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills.
