The project investigates early learning and teaching of English in Danish primary schools. Specifically, it examines the age factor by collecting and comparing proficiency test data from children introduced to English in the 1[sup]st[/sup]grade and the 3[sup]rd[/sup] grade, respectively. In addition, the project investigates contextual factors (the quantity and quality of exposure to English inside and outside the classroom) and socio-affective factors (children’s motivation and attitudes towards learning, and parents’ education, (perceived) proficiency in the FL, their attitudes towards language learning, and their use of the foreign language professionally) in children’s rate of L2 learning and short-term English language proficiency.

This particular PhD project will be concerned with the role of quantity and quality of exposure to English inside the classroom. The aim of this is to investigate how classroom practices and young FL learners’ participation patterns play into the development of their FL proficiency. The project will employ a combination of ethnographic and conversation analytic methodology. Applicants should take heed of the full project description which is available upon request.

The successful applicant will hold a relevant Master's degree and will have knowledge of and/or experience with foreign/second language learning/teaching and/or usage-based linguistics. Applicants should submit a description of a PhD project that falls within the proposed study outlined above. The project description must be in English or Danish. The successful applicant will be enrolled in the PhD School of the Faculty of Humanities
