Ph.D. or M.S. Graduate Research Assistantship – Black Duck Wintering Ecology, WV
Job Description:
DESCRIPTION: Student will be supported by a 3-year Research Assistantship with funding provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Black Duck Joint Venture (BDJV), West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The objectives of the study are to: 1) Determine non-breeding black duck use of rivers and created and natural wetlands in West Virginia and Pennsylvania; 2) Construct time-activity budgets of black ducks within each habitat type to calculate basic energy expenditure models; 3) Determine potential carrying capacity, based on seeds and invertebrates, of wetlands; 4) Relate black duck densities and behavioral activities to landscape and habitat characteristics; and 5) Develop regional bioenergetics models of the amount and type of habitat needed to meet BDJV goals.
Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS: PhD applications are preferred. M.S. in Wildlife, Ecology, Environmental Science, or closely related field for Ph.D. degree or similar B.S. degree for M.S. position. Minimum GPA of 3.4 and combined quantitative/verbal GRE scores of 305 (~1,200 old scoring system). A strong interest in waterfowl management is required. Previous experience with wetland and waterfowl is highly desired.
Salary:
STIPEND: $19,848/year (Ph.D.), $16,536 (MS)

MS Assistantship: Bobcat Ecology, IL
Job Description:
A M.S. graduate assistantship is available starting 1 July 2015 in the Department of Biological Sciences at Western Illinois University to study the ecology of bobcats in northern Illinois. Primary research objectives include: (1) estimating density of a local population of bobcats, (2) comparing rates of capture/recapture for different spatial arrays of remote camera traps, (3) estimating home ranges of bobcats in agriculture-intensive landscapes, and (4) recommending efficient protocols for estimating density of bobcats. The successful applicant will be hired by 1 July 2015, with field work being initiated during Fall 2015. The student will receive his/her M.S. in Biology at Western Illinois University.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have (1) a B.S. in wildlife ecology, zoology, ecology, or a closely related field; (2) experience capturing and handling mesocarnivores and conducting radiotelemetry; (3) proficiency using remote cameras; (4) earned GPA >3.0/4.0; (5) GRE scores >1100 (old scale) or equivalent (new scale); (6) strong quantitative skills; and (7) strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Additionally, applicants should be independently motivated to take action to meet project objectives, are self-starters, possess a strong work ethic, and have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Job Description:
A M.S. graduate assistantship in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources in collaboration with Tall Timbers Research Station studying northern bobwhite reintroduction biology is available starting summer 2015. Primary research objectives include: (1) estimating northern bobwhite survival post-reintroduction, (2) estimating northern bobwhite fecundity post-reintroduction, and (3) estimating space use of northern bobwhites in novel landscapes. The study will take place on a large plantation where bobwhite restoration is in its early phases. Student will spend a significant portion of the year on the study area.
Qualifications:
Candidates should have (1) a B.S. in wildlife ecology, zoology, ecology, or a closely related field; (2) experience capturing and handling birds (bobwhites a plus) and conducting radio-telemetry; (3) proficiency using ATVs; (4) earned GPA >3.0/4.0; (5) competitive GRE scores (e.g., >1000 on old scale); (6) strong quantitative skills; and (7) strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent oral and written communication skills. A valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required.
Salary:
$17,046/yr + tuition waiver
