1. Reliable Uncoordinated Medium Access for Critical Low-Latency Communication The main objective of this project is to analyze a promising class of uncoordinated medium access protocols, namely coded slotted ALOHA, using concepts from coding theory.
 
2. Signal Processing and Antenna Concepts for Reliable 5G Vehicle Communication The main objective of this project is to investigate the signal processing for 5G C-ITS antenna concepts, including MIMO, to be used for all-to-all broadcast messages between vehicles as well as backhaul links to/from the vehicles, especially at higher frequencies..
 
The salary range before tax for PhD students is 29100 – 34200 SEK/month (= 3300 – 3900 USD/month = 3000 – 3600 EUR/month) including full social benefits. There are no tuition fees for PhD studies at Chalmers.

15 PhD Marie-Curie positions for the 5GSTEPFWD project

Project description

5G STEP-FWD, a newly launched Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) offers fifteen (15) PhD positions in six European countries. The project will work towards a new high capacity and low latency architecture for backhauling 5G networks. The proposed architecture takes full advantage of the ultra-narrow wavelength spacing of the UDWDM technology, in order to provide connectivity to a dense small-cell population. The project researchers will work both at the physical and the network layer domains, aiming at designing systems and algorithms for building the 5G cellular network of tomorrow. Qualifications

The candidate must have a master's degree in electrical, electronics, telecommunications, photonics engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree. 

Salary and appointment terms

The Early Stage Researchers (ESR) enrolments are under very attractive employment conditions and competitive salaries offered in Marie Curie Innovative Training Networks. The period of employment is 3 years. All ESRs will take part in a secondment other project partner for up to 6 months of their appointment period. Candidates will be enrolled in a PhD degree program in the selected city position.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates must also meet the following criteria: 1) be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers; 2) be of any nationality, but not having resided or carried out their main activity in the country of the host institution of the position they are applying to for more than 1 year in the past 3 years; 3) have not yet been awarded a PhD degree.

Post-doc and PhD/Research Engineer positions in Vehicular Networks

Job description

One post-doc and one PhD/Research Engineer positions are offered in the framework of the European H2020 TransAID (Transition Areas for Infrastructure-Assisted Driving) research project. The project will develop and demonstrate infrastructure-assisted traffic management procedures, protocols and guidelines for smooth coexistence between automated, connected and conventional vehicles. Within the project, the UWICORE lab at UMH leads the design and implementation of V2X communications and networking solutions. The candidates will work on the following topics:

• Design of cooperative V2X sensing mechanisms to enable the cooperative detection and identification of conventional, connected and automated vehicles. It can include the collection and possible aggregation of the information about detected vehicles.
  
  
• Define the message flows needed to implement cooperative driving manoeuvres between connected and automated vehicles and road infrastructure, extending the ETSI TC ITS Communications Architecture Facilities.
  
  
• Design of reliable V2X communications and networking mechanisms that support the proposed cooperative V2X sensing and driving solutions.
  
  
• Definition/extension of V2X Facility-layer message sets to support the proposed cooperative V2X sensing and driving solutions.
  
  
• The work will require the design and evaluation of protocols mainly through simulations and real-world implementations; theoretical analyses can be also expected. Some of the solutions will require prototyping in vehicles and one of the two candidates will lead such prototyping.
  

 

Post-doc candidate

Candidates should have a PhD in Telecommunications, Electrical, or Computer Engineering (or closely related disciplines), and a proven track record of publications in relevant journals and conferences. The UWICORE (Ubiquitous Wireless Communications Research) lab is part of the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche (Spain). The lab activities focus on: vehicular networks, 5G and industrial wireless networks. TCD is the top ranked University in Ireland, and CONNECT is the world leading SFI Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications.

Topic: Today we are witnessing the impressive transformation of wireless networks. The demand has dramatically shifted from voice to data-hungry and low-latency communication and computing services, and new types of users have emerged such as autonomous vehicles and Internet-of-Things devices. In order to address these challenges, the next generation wireless systems need to employ forward-looking solutions such as network function virtualization technologies, software-defined network architectures, and mobile edge computing platforms. At TCD we are working at the nexus of these game-changing ideas, developing an experimentally-validated analytical framework that leverages machine learning for the design of 5G systems. Special emphasis is given on emerging services such as rich-media applications, intelligent transportation applications, and industry automation. This PhD position is offered in collaboration with NEC Laboratories Europe, the 5G Networks R&D Group. 

Environment: The successful applicant will join the SoftEdge project team in CONNECT, and will have the opportunity to collaborate closely (through regular visits and internships) with the 5G Group at NEC Laboratories in Heidelberg, Germany. Signal processing aspects of joint energy and spectrum collaboration for future wireless communications networks

Abstract:

With wireless and mobile communications applications playing a crucial role in everyday life, meeting the connectivity and throughput demands that is for foreseen for 5G and beyond 5G networks requires efficient spectrum sharing techniques. As a result, aggressive frequency reuse and new Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) schemes [1] are expected to be in the spotlight of the wireless communications research community.

At the same time, the pressing need for reducing carbon emissions, calls for new energy efficient/energy aware communications techniques. To meet this need, currently several solutions are investigated exploiting renewable energy resources and renewable energy sharing [2], RF-signal energy harvesting/recycling, and advanced Base Station on-off switching techniques as means towards achieving energy efficiency.

While both the above research areas are being currently investigated, the potential coming from the fully- joint investigation of spectrum and energy resources still remains unexploited. The focus of this 

PhD will be on the intersection of these two research areas with particular focus on the following research direction:

Design of collaborative/multipurpose signal processing/physical layer techniques

The use of non-orthogonal spectrum sharing techniques along with the expectation for massive connectivity demand, not only allows for the efficient exploitation of bandwidth resources by multiple users, but also contributes towards creating an interference-rich environment that can be used by power-limited users for energy harvesting purposes. With this in mind, this PhD thesis will investigate the design of physical layer (e.g. beamforming) techniques aiming at tackling the multifaceted problem of minimizing power consumption while satisfying 1) throughput constraints as set by active (content requesting) users, as well as 2) received/harvested energy constraints as set by power-limited RF-energy harvesting users. Scenarios accounting for limited Channel State Information (CSI) availability will be considered, as well as scenarios accounting for different levels of CSI availability. Initially, the focus will be on the design of techniques not presuming Base Station collaboration. Extending this initial approach, the aim will shift towards investigating the benefits of Base Station collaboration. Different collaboration policies will be considered exploiting: 1) Energy based collaboration exploiting architectures for jointly handling/trading renewable energy resources commonly accessible to the network base stations (e.g. the energy aggregator based architecture introduced in [2]), 2) Spectrum based collaboration based on the use of Multicell designs exploiting Multicell-MIMO techniques. The benefits and limitations of system designs based on these two 

policies will be investigated, and best practices accounting for CSI exchange and computational complexity limitations will be recognized.

Two PhD studentships available in the area of “Coded Sparse Signaling for Massive MIMO Communications”

Background:
Massive MIMO is a key technology for 5G-and-beyond wireless networks, which is capable of dramatically increasing both the spectral efficiency and the energy efficiency of the network. This project will design new transmitters and receivers as well as advanced signal processing algorithms for massive MIMO systems, based on the concept of sparse signaling, also known as generalized spatial modulation. The research will center on the joint design of channel coding, generalized spatial modulation, and receiver signal processing (channel estimation, compressed-sensing based signal detection, and iterative channel decoding). The new communication system designs will be validated by extensive mathematical analysis as well as by simulation. Channel coding techniques will center on state-of-the-art LDPC and polar code constructions, as these provide excellent performance advantages as well as lowcomplexity implementations. Interactions between the compressed-sensing based front-end detection process and the iterative channel decoder will be a key focus of the receiver design problem.
The PhD positions are fully funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC) with tuition fees and scholarships covered for four years starting in September 2018. The research will be conducted under the supervision of Associate Professor Mark Flanagan in conjunction with international academic collaborators.
The successful candidates should hold a Bachelors or Masters degree (First or Upper Second Class Honors) in electronic/communication engineering, computer science or a related discipline, and should possess a very strong background in mathematics, communication theory, signal processing and programming. Excellent writing and oral communication skills are also required.
